For many years, women have been left out of politics and remained helpless as most political parties are dominated with men. However, in recent years, we have seen women joining politics and rising to the helm of power.
In 2010, Kenya passed a constitution which advocates for gender equality. The constitution provides a 2/3 gender rule in all government appointments and also the seat for woman representative was created to allow more representation of women in parliament.
This saw a number of women elected in various elective positions in 2013 and in 2017 more women were represented. Three women clenched County Governors positions which was a boost for women in politics.
The Registrar of Political Parties Ms Anne Nderitu admits there has been an increase in participation of women in running of political parties and expects that through this, many of them will be on the ballot.
Apart from those holding various elective positions, many others have taken the bold step of establishing political parties. They include Ms Martha Karua, party leader of Narc Kenya; and Charity Ngilu, who leads the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc).
It is also the first time in Kenya to have a female Chief Justice. Chief Justice Martha Koome made headlines when she was selected as chief justice of the Republic of Kenya after a vigorous interview that was broadcast on National televisions. She is deputised by Justice Philomena Mwili.
It also came as a Surprise to many when Azimio La Umoja One Kenya presidential candidate Hon Raial Odinga picked Nark Kenya party Leader Ms Martha Karua for the running mate position. Ms Karua had been flaunted by women in the Azimio outfit and there was celebration when she came out top of the list.
If the Azimio team wins the August general elections, Martha will be the first female Deputy president of the Republic of Kenya and the second deputy president under the new constitution.
No matter the outcome, it is a milestone in Kenya as more women are seen on the front line of this years campaigns and are a force to reckon with.
