Think of your daily life. You have things that you wish for and would love to possess or acquire, and you will work hard to achieve, because you believe they will make you happy or satisfy your needs and wants. Now imagine experiencing lifetime satisfaction, happiness, joy and pleasure. That’s what we achieve when we desire God. In Psalms 37:4, the Bible talks of delighting in the Lord, and He will give us our hearts desires.
Therefore, how can we serve God in spirit and truth? John 4:23-24 KJV- But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Most Christians are familiar with Jesus speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well and responding to her when she commented that they (the Samaritans) worshipped in the mountains while the Jewish in Jerusalem. It doesn’t matter where you worship God from, but every moment of our lives matters. We can gather anywhere or be at any place and worship God.
To worship God in spirit, means it must come from our hearts, be sincere and be motivated by our love and desire for God. Wanting to know Him each day. We should fuel our knowledge by reading the Bible regularly and knowing our God. The Bible will help in our spiritual growth and knowing what to do to avoid sin. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He was able to resist because of knowledge.
The Holy Spirit awakens our knowledge and understanding of God. It gives us power to differentiate the good and bad and experience the power of God. When the apostles received the Holly Spirit during the Pentecost day, they became bold and manifested in different tongues. Acts 2:1
Our Worship of God must be true. We should not do it because others are doing it, but because we want to worship God and we yearn for Him. Again the revelation of God in the Bible scriptures will guide us to the truth. We must live by the truth in our daily lives. Jesus said that He is the Way, Truth and Life. John 14:6
Spirit and Truth belong together. You cannot worship in spirit alone and forget the truth or worship in truth alone and forget the spirit. Worship that doesn’t stir feelings, emotions is worthless. Jesus Himself called the Pharisees hypocrites because their deeds did not match what the scriptures said. Matthew 23:13-39
There are different ways of worshipping God. King David worshipped God through songs and dance, Abraham prayed and built alters to God to show his gratitude, Jesus Christ fasted as Christians of today do. It doesn’t mean you have to worship the way your friend does. If you can lift up your hands, kneel to show submission and praise God, do what you feel is right in your heart and makes you feel you are worshipping God in Truth and Spirit.
Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD. (Psalms 150:6 KJV)
