The Green Park Terminal that is adjacent to Uhuru Park is set to be opened soon for the public and expected to be the new drop point and pick up station for all “Matatu’s” plying the Ngong road route.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) hopes that this move will end the perennial traffic congestion whitnessed in the capital city each day.
However most PSV operators are skeptical about this and don’t think it is the solution. Passengers will also have to walk along way to get to the city or get an alternative means of transport such as “boda- boda” to reach the central business district of town. Traders are also expected to pay a token fee which will be used to maintain the park.
Last year, NMS carried out a test run on the terminal to see how business and Matatus will operate. The operation witnessed confusion and congestion, prompting the NMS to halt the exercise. There was also complains from passengers and traders who were not satisfied.
Despite being a matatu terminus, different amenities will be available to commuters and matatu crew including a dispensary, supermarket, restaurant and a commuter sitting bay. Other terminals are under construction in Nairobi. The terminal costed Sh250 million.
