Kenya’s Tea And Coffee Export Earnings Increase
Agriculture dominates the Kenyan economy and some of the major exports are tea and coffee.
Kenya’s tea export earnings grew by $141.2 million, representing 13.3 percent increment. Earnings from local tea consumption declined to $168 million against $177 million realised a year earlier. This year, the Mombasa Tea auction has seen an increase in prices compared to last year.
Kenya is the fifth largest producer of coffee in Africa which is amazing for farmers and the agricultural sector. Kenya earned $213 million from coffee between January and November 2021, with the value surpassing the entire 2020 earnings that stood at $196 million according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics data.
Despite the rise in earnings, the quantity of coffee exported declined as production continued to dwindle for the second consecutive year. The money earned from both exports will be paid to the small scale farmers.
Farmers will benefit highly as exports will provide better provision of inputs and production services. It will also bring forth introduction of appropriate farming technology thus making workload easier. The increase in sale and also the direct export offers a higher return for farmers leading to better earnings by farmers.
