International Tiger Day 2022

The International Tiger Day is marked annually on July 29. The significance of this day is to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues. Tigers are the largest of the worlds big cats. Unfortunately, they are endangered species due to human activities such as poaching and loss of habitat and need to be protected.

A tiger can be easily recognized by its distinctive orange and black stripes on its face and body. The habitat include the Siberian taiga, swamps, grasslands, and rainforests. They can be found in Russia, North Korea, China, India, and Southwest Asia to the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

India hosts 70% of worlds population of tigers and to celebrate this day, the theme is “India launches Project Tiger to revive the tiger population”.

History Of International Tiger Day

The International Tiger Day was first celebrated in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia to raise awareness about the loss of the tiger population globally. The tigers were at a brick of extinction and this day not only raises awareness of preserving the tigers but also protects and encourages the expansion of their habitat.

Climate change, poaching, human inhabitation and activities such as cutting of timber and farming are some of the reasons why there is a decline in tiger population in the world.
