DP Ruto On Kenya’s Democracy and Fair Elections
Deputy President William Ruto has raised concerns over intimidation, threats and black mail ahead of the 2022 August general elections.
The DP said this are the biggest threats to whether Kenyans will make independent choices on the ballot, calling the International community to intervene and stop what he says are attempts to influence elections. “The biggest issue that is in the ballot is the democracy of our nation and whether we truly have the opportunity to make free choices. That’s a matter that is on the ballot.” He stated.
However, he said that Kenyans have stood firmly and will make their own choice. They have the phrase “hatupangwingwi” which basically means they will make their own independent choices.
The DP was speaking at the Karson Institute for Race, Peace and Social Justice in Maryland, US. He is on a ten day tour in the US and UK.
Some of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga allies have criticised Ruto over his statements made at Karson Institute. ” President Kenyatta supporting Raila does not compromise our elections. The only reason Ruto is bitter, claiming elections will be compromised, is because Uhuru did not endorse him.” Said John Mdadi.
This is not the first time that the Deputy President has made allegations of attempts of rigging elections in his campaigns. This has also prompted International Community to seek assurance from the government that elections will be free and fair.
Last Month, Murang’a woman representative Sabina Chege came under attacks after her remarks that suggested that the 2017 elections were rigged. DP Ruto and his allies rubbished Sabina Chege’s remarks even as he exuded confidence that he would emerge victorious.
