Animal Feed Prices Set To Rise

Animal feed prices are expected to rise further due to shortage of raw materials. This is due to the delay of publication of changes made on the requirement of importation of yellow maize in the gazette notice.

The published changes have lowered the GMO traces accepted in any imported yellow maize from 100% purity to 99.1% has seen millers reluctant to import the yellow maize for fears that it will be confiscated by authorities for having exceeded the limits.

Farmers and manufacturers say the cost of animal feeds has risen by over 40%. The Association of Kenya Feeds Manufacturers (AKEFEMA) is calling fort swift Government intervention to prevent livestock sector from total collapse.

In the past few weeks, there has been a rise in food prices in Kenya due to high prices of farm inputs and fertiliser, forcing farmers to pass the cost to consumers. A 500ML of milk went up by Ksh. 20 and the increase in animal feeds may further shoot up the price.
