IEBC Asks Political Parties To Comply With Gender Rule Or Be Kicked Out Of 2022 Elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has asked political parties to comply with the two-thirds gender rule or get locked out of the 2022 general election for the said elective positions.

Chebukati noted that 38 parties that have submitted names of candidates for members of parliament seats and 48 political parties that submitted lists of candidates for Senate seats complied with the gender rule. This is from a list of 81 political parties.

According to IEBC all political parties have to comply with the two-thirds gender rule regardless of how many candidates they present for various elective positions.

On April 27, the commission issued a letter stating that the commission would not accept lists submitted by political parties if they don’t comply.

Political parties have until May 9 to submit lists of aspirants that comply with the two-thirds gender principle or risk being disqualified in the August polls.
