International Day Of Forest; Plant A Tree
Have you ever thought of the significance of forest rather than its a source of fuel and shade? Think of the water we drink. We do not always make the connection with trees, but they are a significant part of our lives.
Today March 21 the world celebrates the International Day of Forests to spread awareness of importance of forest and conservation of this most valued natural treasure. The United Nations (U.N.) passes a resolution to observe March 21 as the International Day of Forests.
Over the years, the world has been grappling with climate change. Weather patterns have changed and are unpredictable. Right now, there is a lot of heat, despite the weather man predictions of rains coming soon, farmers have not yet planted crops as they are still waiting for the rains. This may also be a threat to food production. People in the North Eastern part of Kenya, Somali and Ethiopia are suffering from starvation due to drought.
Trees help to attract rainfall, are main source of water bodies such as rivers and streams and home to wildlife. Deforestation through cutting down of trees to make fuel and build houses reduces the forest cover and endanger wild animals lives. Alternative means should be used as source of fuel such as bio-gas and gas. However this may be expensive for those living in the rural areas who relay on firewood for cooking.
You can mark this day by planting trees with friends and colleagues to help the world and Kenya reach a 10% forest cover. Tomorrow the 22nd the world will mark the World Water Day and celebrate water as well as raises awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water.
