The Hub of Kenya’s History; The Kenya National Archives

We have all walked past the Kenya National Archives and given it a glance while going to our various destinations. It is located at the corner of the central business district in Nairobi, along Moi Avenue next to Ambassador hotel.

Inside the Archives is the history of Kenya. I once decided to explore the inside and I was amazed. It was so affordable because I only paid fifty shillings as I am a resident but for non-residents it is only two hundred shillings.

At first glance inside one may think it is an art gallery, but although it contains various art pieces From Countries like Nigeria and Ethiopia, it is more than that. It is the home of ancient artifacts and valuable historical records of the Nation.

I experienced firsthand information about Kenya’s Governance before and even after independence. The records are stored in various methods like the paper format, video tapes, discs and other audio visual materials.

One of the most amazing things I saw was the seat that the first president of Kenya H.E Mzee Jomo Kenyatta sat on during his term. I would like to call it the “seat if power”. Another thing is how everything was arranged in chronological order from how it started to how it currently is. There are also photos of all the current Governor’s of various Counties in Kenya.

The national archives is also home to some of the weapons that were used long ago and very beautiful and valuable jewellery. They also have a library where one can go and study the history of Kenya more deeper. All I can say is it was such a wonderful experience and any time you pass by the Kenya National Archives, just spare some time and get in so you can experience Kenya’s heritage.
