The Power of Words (How to Control Your Tongue)

The Bible compares the tongue to a sharpened razor and not easy to control. It can either pour out blessings or spit curses. The Bible also stresses on what you say is what is in your heart. The power to control what you say and how you say it is a sign of spiritual maturity, meaning it is only by the grace of God that we can be able to control our words and speak of good rather than evil.

I stand by the rule, if you have nothing good to say, then don’t speak and when spoken harshly to, try to avoid the situation and be slow to anger. I believe this rule can help in maintaining peace among people. “Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity” –Prov 21:23

Pray for forgiveness for every word you say. Human beings are forgetful and we sometimes can’t remember words spoken that may have hurt others or led some to sin. That is why it is good to pray and ask God to give us wisdom and understanding of the words that come out of our mouths.

Commit to changing your bad habits and vocabulary so that you may show Gods goodness to the world. Everyone knows their weakness and there is always room to change. If your vocabulary is always words that hurt other people’s feelings, try for a day to say something good to others, like telling your neighbor that you have never spoken to that they look good that morning. It can make a difference in that person’s life.

Be quick to listen and slow to speak. Always listen to what people say before coming up with an answer. In today’s world children are becoming unruly because they are not listened to causing them to act out. The school fires last year may be a good example of teenagers in high school reacting because they are not listened to.

The tongue has the power of life and death. They are intertwined with the spiritual world and your mind. If you keep telling yourself you can’t do it, then your mind records that and makes you act in a certain way that shows your failure. It’s also what you have professed with your mouth. Always try to think and speak positively about yourself each day. Encourage yourself each day and say good things about yourself.

Matthew 19:26 says that “Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” The way to tame your tongue is by partnering with the Holy Spirit; these problems cannot be solved or transformed by mere willpower.
