UNEP Commemorates 50 Years Since Inception

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is celebrating 50 years since its inception in 1972. The commemoration is being marked by a special session that started yesterday 3rd and will end today, 4th March, 2022. With the theme “Strengthening UNEP for the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

UNEP has been coordinating worldwide to confront the planets biggest environmental challenges. This gives an opportunity for stake holders and countries to discuss crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

Earlier in the week, the United Nations Environmental Assembly 5 (UNEA-5) had taken place with main focus on plastic pollution, and how to solve its effects especially on marine and peoples health and economy. Other issues that were discussed during the summit were green recovery and chemical waste management. This highlights the pivotal role nature plays in the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

The special session of UNEP@50 coincided with the World Wildlife Day and other events including the establishment of Multi-Partner Trust Fund on Nature 4 Health.
